How much do solar batteries cost in 2024?

Solar battery costs vary between £2,500 -  £10,000, depending on the size of the solar battery. Typical domestic solar batteries range from 3 - 14kWh.

Larger homes with the highest energy demands will require a solar battery with more storage capacity than smaller homes. Batteries with the largest storage capacities come at higher prices.

Take a look at our price breakdown below.

Solar battery storage prices
Solar battery size Solar panel system size Solar battery sizeSolar battery cost
Small; 1-2 bedrooms2 - 3kW4 - 7kWh£3,500 - £8,000
Medium; 2-3 bedrooms4 - 5kW9 - 12kWh£5,000 -  £9,500
Large; 4-5 bedrooms6kW13 - 14kWh£10,000+

These prices are only estimates and are meant as a guide. For the most accurate prices, tailored to your home, you should consult a professional solar installer.

Is the price of solar batteries increasing or decreasing?

Between 2010 and 2024, global solar battery prices fell 85% as commercial production accelerated to meet increased demand. This growth was halted slightly by supply-demand shocks between 2020 and 2022.

However, following this period, solar panel battery costs in the UK are projected to continue declining, according to a report by the Mercator Research Institute.

Tesla and Powervault provide some of the best solar battery storage in the UK. Take a look at our dedicated brand pages to learn more about these companies and the solar batteries they have to offer:

Factors influencing the solar panel battery costs in the UK

As we mentioned above, one of the most important factors affecting new solar battery costs is the battery size. A battery with a larger storage capacity can store more energy for larger properties, resulting in a higher price.

The battery size required for your home will depend on the size of your solar array. Therefore, you can estimate the required solar battery size according to the size of your solar panel system and the amount of electricity your solar panel system can produce per day.

Take a look at these estimates below.

What size solar battery do I need for my solar panel system?
Solar panel systemRequired solar battery size Solar battery costSolar panel costTotal system cost
2kW4 - 5kWh£3,500 – £5,000£5,000 - £6,000£8,500 – £11,000
3kW6 - 7 kWh£5,000 - £8,000£7,000 - £8,000£12,000 – £16,000
4kW9  - 10 kWh£8,000 - £9,500£9,000 - £10,000£17,000 – £19,500
5kW11 - 12kWh£9,000 – £10,000£11,000 - £12,000£21,000 – £22,000
6kW13 - 14kWh£10,000+£12,000 - £13,000£22,000 – £23,000

You can estimate your daily energy needs by checking your average consumption, which is usually provided as part of your electricity bills.

Considering the upfront cost of solar panels, the additional solar battery costs may put you off. However, remember that if the battery is integrated along with the solar panels then the labour costs may be slightly lower, as all the electrical work and permitting for both the solar and battery systems can be completed in a single effort.

Let's look at some other factors that help determine a solar battery's cost in the UK.

Battery type

The type of battery you use can also impact the total price. In the UK, lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries are the most commonly used types of domestic solar batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are the most popular type of solar battery in the UK. This is because they are compact, long-lasting, and have a high usable capacity, often reaching depths of discharge rates of 80% or more.

Lead-acid batteries are comparatively cheaper than their lithium-ion counterparts. However, lithium-ion batteries are worth the additional cost considering that lead-acid batteries have a shorter lifespan and lower depth of discharge rate, typically only reaching around 50%.

Installation

By installing a solar battery alongside a new solar array, you will likely save more money than if you were to wait and install one down the line. That's because the installation and labour costs will be combined with those of the solar panel system.

Installation rates can vary depending on the installer you choose. In this way, it's possible to save money by choosing an installer that offers a good deal. However, it can be tricky to find an affordable option that you can rely on to do a good job.

Are there grants to lower solar battery costs?

While there aren't any nationwide grants that specifically help with reducing the cost of new solar batteries, there are some government incentives and regional schemes that you can benefit from.

VAT reduction

0% VAT

The UK government introduced a VAT cut on solar energy products as of April 2022. Solar panels and solar batteries can now be purchased with 0% VAT. VAT previously sat between 5-20% in the UK.

Solar batteries were only ever included in the scheme when installed alongside a solar panel system and did not apply to solar batteries installed retroactively. That was, until February 2024, when the VAT cut extended to any type of new solar battery.

This scheme will run till April 2027, after which time, the VAT rate will rise to 5%.

Home Energy Scotland Loan

Home Energy Scotland

Homeowners in Scotland can also benefit from an interest-free loan as part of the Home Energy Scotland scheme.

Through the scheme, you can receive a grant of £5,000 for a new solar battery, and even a solar panel grant of £6,000. The repayment period ranges from 5-10 years.

Are there hidden costs of a solar battery storage?

The overall cost of solar battery storage greatly depends on your choice of installer and the local market conditions. In times of high demand for batteries, installers might increase the prices for the available units.

Additionally, there are maintenance and service costs associated with the solar and battery systems. Here is a breakdown of the average costs for different components:

Solar panel system additional costs
System componentAverage costs
Solar battery£2,500 –  £10,000+
Solar panels (inc. installation)£5,000 – £15,000
Labour costs (per day)£600 – £1,000
Maintenance costs: cleaning panels£10 / panel
Maintenance costs: annual service£100 – £200

How much can you save when you install solar batteries?

If you're wondering "Is it worth it getting solar panels?", then maybe a solar battery will help convince you of their benefits. That's because incorporating a solar battery into your system can lead to a 70% reduction in your electricity bills, according to the Energy Savings Trust.

Smart Export Guarantee

These otential savings from a solar battery can be gained from the electricity generated by your panels, the surplus electricity from your battery, and earnings from grid service tariffs such as the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).

Through SEG, you may receive payment for any excess stored electricity that you feed back to the grid. The income you receive in return depends on the tariff provider, usually ranging from 1-20p/kWh.

The table below shows the potential savings you could make by integrating a solar battery into your solar panel system, through the SEG.  These estimates are based on an example tariff rate of 5.5p/kWh.

Potential savings with a solar battery
House size Solar panel systemTotal savings including SEG payment Total savings without SEG
Small; 1-2 bedrooms2 – 3kW £555£515
Medium; 2-3 bedrooms3 – 4kW£855£770
Large; 3-4 bedrooms5 – 6kW£1,230£1,175

For a more accurate assessment of the potential savings you can make, we strongly recommend consulting with a professional installer.
