How to prepare your garden for an Olympic party

The Olympic opening ceremony will officially get the 2024 Paris Olympic Games underway. Millions across the UK will be tuning into the dozens of different sporting events, whilst cheering on Team GB.

It can be a fantastic event to get your family, friends or neighbours together for a party and celebration. The opening ceremony is particularly popular, with Time Magazine predicting that over 1.5 billion people will watch around the world.

So start gathering your decorations, snacks and drinks for an opening ceremony get-together. Begin sending invitations out now to ensure you can spend the special evening accompanied by loved ones.

To help you plan your party, we at Household Quotes have revealed seven tips to prepare your garden for an Olympic party.

1. Clear space

A party is a great way to socialise, so make sure you make space in your garden for all of your guests to stand. Also, think of any children who might attend who will want space to run around and play. Clearing space will allow you to put more tables and chairs in your garden, and make it feel less cramped. As well as giving you a place to put drinks and bowls of food for guests, which is the best bit of any party.

2. Flag bunting

It wouldn’t be a true Olympic party without flag-related decorations, flag bunting is great for a garden as it sits well on fences and hedges. You can buy them with the flags of each individual country which is competing in the games. This will make all your guests feel represented, even if they aren’t backing Team GB. It’s also very cheap, with it currently being sold on Amazon for under £10.

3. Colouring

If you have children some of the best bits of decoration for a garden can be pictures that they have coloured in. These could be flags or well-known Olympic athletes, pictures can often be found online to print out. It’s great for kids as it will keep them occupied during the summer break, and look great when stuck around your garden.

4. BBQ

Given the Olympics take place in the summer it’s the perfect time to have a BBQ. So get your BBQ out, and start cleaning it ready to be used. If you don’t have one, then ask a family member, friend or neighbour if they have one that you can borrow. Using your cooker isn’t the end of the world either if your attempts at getting a BBQ fail. Hot dogs, burgers, chicken and vegetarian options will be welcomed by your guests.

5. Themed lighting

Given Paris is only an hour ahead of the UK, the opening ceremony will be happening quite late in the evening. This means at some time or another your garden will be immersed in darkness. So invest in some multi-coloured lighting which you can hang around your garden. The Olympic opening ceremony is a very colourful event, so the aim is to make your outside space as bright as possible (but do think of your neighbours). Blue, red, yellow and green are the colours I would suggest, given they are the Olympic rings. You can find these lights for around £10 on several online retailers’ websites.

Joshua Houston, Garden Expert at Household Quotes:

‘’The Olympic Games is an exciting time for sports fans, last time out Team GB came home with 64 medals, and will be hoping to increase that next time round.

Make the opening ceremony special, and host a party which will live well in the memories of those who attend, particularly the children. Those of us who are old enough to remember have great memories of the London Olympic Games back in 2012.’’.
