SSE is a well-known energy, phone and broadband provider. They have an award-winning customer service that has tolls in place to help customers who don’t speak English, are living with dementia or have hearing and sight problems.
Their website is easy to read, with friendly language and plenty of information about their boiler and heating care plans. They also have a help section where they explain common gas boiler and radiator problems.
As well as providing cover for resident homeowners, SSE also has cover for landlords. They also provide a stand-alone boiler repair service for £295.
This price covers call-outs, all labour charges and parts up to a total value of £500.

Boiler Cover and More
There are four boiler cover policies available. Two policies come with an excess and two have a choice of being with or without an excess.
Each policy is a 12-month contract with parts and labour included. Plus there are unlimited 24/7 emergency call-outs.
SSE Boiler Breakdown
This policy comes with a £90 excess and covers your boiler, controls thermostat and programmer.
You have to give your postcode and the make of your boiler to confirm you are eligible for the plan.
There are some limitations to what will be included in the plan. For example, a Valiant boiler over 17 years of age won’t be covered.
British Gas boilers have to be under 15 years old.
SSE Heating Breakdown
The heating breakdown policy has a £50 excess. It covers your boiler, controls, thermostat and programmer.
It also covers your full central heating system, radiators and pipework and your hot water cylinder.
SSE Boiler Cover
Boiler cover has the choice of a £50 excess or no excess. It gives you breakdown cover for your boiler, controls, thermostat and programmer.
It also covers you for an annual boiler service and a free boiler replacement if your boiler can’t be repaired or is beyond economical repair.
When an engineer comes to give your boiler its annual check it should take around 30 minutes. They should check the following:
- The safety devices on the boiler
- A visual check of the boiler for any damage and a look at the flame to make sure it is the right colour
- External and internal check of the flue
- The boiler components which include the burner, heat exchanger, main injector and the sensor probe
- The boiler case seals
- A check that the boiler starts correctly
- Cleaning of any parts if necessary
After the service, the engineer should supply you with a service report and any problems or faults found will be listed with the recommendations about what should be done next.
SSE Heating Cover
This plan comes with the choice of a £50 excess or no excess. It covers all the items in the previous three plans.
You get cover for:

Exclusions: What’s Not Included
The following problems will not be included in any of the cover policies:
- Repairs because of damage caused by sludge, limescale or corrosion
- Pre-existing faults
- Underfloor heating systems
- Condensate pipework that’s blocked or frozen
- Electrical immersion heaters
- LPG, oil and electric heating systems
You should always read the terms and conditions of any plan you take out for repairs or replacements. This is because the T &Cs set out exactly what is and isn’t included in the cover.
For example, in SSE’s T&Cs for boiler repair you’ll see that SSE doesn’t cover boiler brands from Servowarm, Chaffoteux, Ferroli, the Idea Istor boiler or thermal products made by Gledhill.
Other general exclusions include damage caused by floods, storms, lightning, explosion or any other natural disaster.
